Girls Run Practice 5k in Anticipation for GOTR 5k
Wednesday, April 8th and Thursday the 9th were big days for our GOTR ladies and their running buddies as they participated in their practice 5k. The girls ran 3.1 miles in preparation for their season-ending achievement run May 9 at the New Balance Girls on the Run 5k. Both Percy Priest
groups ran a course around the school while KIPP Academy had their practice run out at Shelby Park. Because of inclement weather, the girls of Guild Elementary ran April 18 at Triple Creek Park in Gallatin.
The girls all did a fantastic job, and with help, support and encouragement from their running buddies they all finished the 5k, which for some was the first time they completed the challenge of 3.1 miles. As the girls crossed the pink finish line with friends and family members cheering them on, they were all smiles. After their run, the girls were presented with a certificate of completion and some delicious pink and white cupcakes from Dulce Desserts.
Thursday the Predators organization surprised our KIPP Academy program by having mascot Gnash at its practice 5k. Gnash gave the girls high-fives on at the course’s water stop. Vanderbilt Cross Country Coach Steve Keith also cheered the girls on as he led the pack along the course on his bike, and some of the Belmont Men’s Cross Country team were there to show support. Many thanks to Frank Schmidt (Smitty), former Nashville Striders President, who came out and mapped a great course for the Guild girls.
On May 9, 48 participants from the Girls on the Run spring program and their running buddies will lead the pack in the season-ending New Balance Girls on the Run 5k. The race is open to the public. Register online by visiting active.com or follow the link at www.gotr5k.com.
