Girls on the Run Nashville is looking for interested volunteers for upcoming Fall 2010 program sites.

Coaches, running buddies and practice session volunteers serve as mentors and motivators for program participants as the girls learn to use running as inspiration for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Volunteers in most roles do not need to be runners, just men and women interested in the health and well-being of grade school and middle school age girls.

Here’s a little more information on each opportunity.

COACHES

As the group leaders, coaches prepare for and supervise 24 twice-weekly after school practice sessions. They are provided with the Girls on the Run curriculum and all the supplies needed for each practice’s running games and wellness lessons.

Head coaches must become CPR and first-aid certified, complete a background check, and attend a one-day (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) coaches training on August 28 at East Park Community Center. In addition to each afternoon practice, a coach must also be available for the end-of-season 5k on December 11 in Nashville’s Shelby Park.

ASSISTANT COACHES

Assistant coaches also attend the August 28 training at East Park Community Center, but the do not need to be present at every after-school practice. They assist as they can, according to their own schedules.

PRACTICE VOLUNTEERS

Practice session volunteers attend our after-school programs as their schedules permit.*
There is no training involved in becoming a practice session volunteer.

Volunteer scheduling is done through an online calendar. Volunteers are granted access after completing a background check and program sign-up on the “Get Involved” page.

A running buddy pairs with one particular girl for a practice 5k (Oct. 23, Nov. 10 or 11, depending on program) and the Frostbite 5k on December 11 at Nashville’s Shelby Park. Running buddies are adult mentors, pacers, and motivators for our program girls.

To sign up for one of these opportunities please visit the “Get Involved” page. You can also view a list of Fall 2010 program sites and practice times on our “Program” page.
